Leatherworking enables you to craft your own leather armour and at a later stage mail armour as well. This profession is mostly aimed at Leather and Mail users such as hunters, shamans, rogues and druids. Once you get past level 225 you can specialize in either Dragonscale Leatherworking, Elemental Leatherworking or Tribal Leatherworking allowing you to craft advanced recipes restricted from the average leatherworker.
Leatherworking is a solid and useful profession providing you not only with armour, but also a few handy items such as Armor Kits which can be used by any class to improve the armor rating of an item (hand, leg, chest and wrist). Most crafted gear is slightly better than the gear you get from non-elite quests, but once you hit higher levels you might find it hard to compete against epic dungeon gear. Also many of the most powerful high level recipes are either dropped from monsters or tied to a certain reputation with one or more factions, requiring a lot of work.

| TIP: |
Although Leatherworking is primarily suited for leather and mail users, it is a versatile profession offering a wide range of useful items including armor kits, quivers and ammo puches. At high levels leatherworkers can earn good coin from selling armor kits and leg armor to augment armor in much the same way that enchanting does. |

Besides making armour, leatherworkers can produce a few items of general use to be sold on the auction house. It’s my experience that the lower levels of Armor Kits sell fairly well, whereas Knothide Armor Kit and in particular the hard-to-get Clefthide Leg Armor and Cobrahide Leg Armor are sold for large amounts of money making Leatherworking a quite profitable trade post level 300. You can also do specialized armor kits to increase resistance, health and mana. High level leatherworkers are also able to make a variety of drums such as Drums of War, Drums of Battle and Drums of Panic, as well as the much sought after Riding Crop to increase riding speed.
Obviously a leatherworker needs leather and in some cases hide in his work. So if you decide to become a Leatherworker you would probably want to pick Skinning as your second profession. Crafting more advanced types of armour often requires odd materials such as rare kinds of leather or hide such as Turtle Scale, Scorpid Scale, Shadowcat Hide, Fel Scales and Crystal Infused Leather. Make sure to check our Skinning guide to learn where to find the rare types of leather. To secure a good progress make sure to learn as many recipes as you can and focus on the “grinding recipes” that require easy-to-get materials.

Dragonscale Leatherworking
As a Leatherworker you can choose to specialize in Dragonscale. To do so you must have Artisan Level Leatherworking (225) and complete a series of quests. To train Dragonscale Leatherworking, speak to either Peter Galen in Azshara (Alliance) or Thorkaf Dragoneye in Badlands (Horde) to begin a quest called Dragonscale Leatherworking. To solve the quest you will need to acquire 2 Tough Scorpid Breastplate, 2 Tough Scorpid Gloves and 10 Worn Dragonscale. You can buy these items on the Auction House if you wish, or you can get them the hard way!
To learn the recipes you need to start grinding the Wastewander Bandits and their friends in Tanaris, they have a chance to drop recipes for the entire Tough Scorpid Armor set. To craft them you need Scorpid Scales which you can skin from all types of scorpids in Tanaris such as Scorpid Hunter. Getting them takes a while, but if you can use mail armour it is a very nice armour set and might be worth the effort. The Worn Dragonscales are skinned from all manner of dragonkin at level 40 and above. The easiest way is to grind the Scalding Whelps in Badlands, but be warned, the droprate is not high, so it will take you a while alone to get the 10 needed to complete the quest. When you have the items needed, deliver them to your dragonscale trainer in Azshara or Badlands, and you are now a Dragonscale Leatherworker!
As you can see this quest line is a little demanding and you will need some hard-earned materials.
Once you know Dragonscale you get access to advanced recipes available only to your specialization. These are Dragonstrike Leggings to begin with, and as you advance further you will be able to learn Golden Dragonstrike Breastplate. All these items are Bind-on-Pickup and are thus restricted to you only. The recipes for Dragonscale Gauntlets and Dragonscale Breastplate have now been released for all leatherworkers to learn. In general, dragonscale leatherworking offers the most powerful mail recipes and is as such ideal to hunters and shamans.
